BACKGROUND:

In the beginning, there was Harry Goodman- a loving father, a husband, and a detective- and that was good.

And then when his son was eleven- right before he was to begin his journey as a Pokemon trainer, Harry’s wife succumbed to an illness and died. Harry threw himself into his work and moved to Ryme City, while his son stayed behind with his grandmother. Once Harry got his affairs settled, he made arrangements for his son, Tim, to come live with him, but Tim, feeling alienated and unloved, refused to go, and from there Harry seemed to, for the most part, stop trying to reach out to his son.

Ten years later and Harry is one of Ryme City’s finest detectives, a local hero and legend, alongside his Pikachu. With his son turning 21, he began to make plans to reach out to him once more, but never got the opportunity, because, as legendary detectives tend to do, he got caught up in something.

Hired by Howard Clifford, Ryme City’s founder, and Dr. Laurent, a Pokemon neurologist, he was paid handsomely to go to Kanto and capture Mewtwo, the world’s most powerful Pokemon. He succeeded, but began to have doubts and refused the payment Howard offered him, choosing instead to ask questions about Howard and Dr. Laurent’s intentions with Mewtwo. When he wasn’t given any answers, he went searching on his own, tracking down a chemical that heightens Pokemon aggression called “Serum R” being used in underground Pokemon fights that eventually led him back to the lab he brought Mewtwo to. Realizing they were making R out of (presumably) Mewtwo’s blood for some nefarious purpose, Harry and his Pikachu sabotaged the lab, released Mewtwo, and tried to escape via Harry’s car. Howard sent weaponized Greninja Pokemon after them and Mewtwo defeated them, but Harry’s car was still thrown over the bridge in the conflict. Harry’s Pikachu survived the crash with no injury, but Harry, himself, was badly wounded. Mewtwo, determined to see this set right, asked that Harry’s Pikachu seek out Harry’s son to do what his father couldn’t. With Harry dying, his Pikachu offered its body as a vessel for Harry’s soul (this was the ultimate endgame of Howard’s plans- human souls inhabiting Pokemon in order to further evolution, using Serum R and Mewtwo’s powers in tandem). The process removed Pikachu and Harry’s memories, but when Pikachu awoke again with a case of the “forgetsies,” as he calls it, he was 100% Harry in soul, just completely unaware of it.

Given that Harry’s name and address was written on the inside of the hat Pikachu was wearing, Pikachu turned to Harry’s apartment first, using his instinctual detective skills to retrace his steps. It was here he ran into Tim who had come to check on Harry’s affairs as everyone believed him to be dead, and the pair are shocked to discover that they can understand one another, since Pikachu can’t be understood by any other human. After Tim accidentally releases some of Harry’s confiscated Serum R on Pokemon outside, which puts them in a frenzied rage, Tim and Pikachu flee across the city. As they collect their breath, Pikachu informs Tim of his situation and expresses outrage that people believe Harry is dead when he clearly isn’t. He vows to pursue this case and pressures Tim into helping him, calling it destiny.

The two pursue a lead by the docks where they meet Harry’s informant- a Mr. Mime Pokemon. After some creative interrogation, the two find themselves at the underground Pokemon fighting ring where the head of it- a man named Sebastian- recognizes Pikachu, claiming that he defeated his Charizard in battle. He promises Tim answers about the R if he gets a rematch. Pikachu obliges, but when he sees Sebastian giving R to his Charizard, he tries to back out. Come to find out, Pikachu can’t remember how to use any of his attacks. Tim runs into the ring to save a helpless Pikachu, prompting Sebastian to run out to protect his own Pokemon. While Charizard rampages, Sebastian is knocked over, smashing his multiple vials of R and turning the entire place into a Pokemon attack frenzy. In the chaos, Tim manages to get Sebastian to confess that he gets the R from a person known as the Doctor. As the chaos escalates, Tim and Pikachu are arrested.

Tim is released by the police chief who refuses to listen to Tim’s insistence that Harry is alive and shows him the video footage of Harry’s car going off the bridge. Dejected, Tim and Pikachu have a conversation where Tim admits that he wishes he had gotten on the train and gone to live with his dad when he had the chance. Pikachu, in turn, says that his dad would be proud of him, which prompts Tim to realize he’s been unkind to his new partner and resolves to help him figure out what happened to his memories.

They are immediately picked up by an associate of Howard’s who brings them to his office and lies to them about what happened with Harry, convincing them that Mewtwo was responsible for the crash and that he had kidnapped Harry, effectively tricking them into finding Mewtwo for them. With the help of Lucy, a reporter who has been aiding Tim, they travel to the lab, where they learn about Harry’s history with Mewtwo and that Dr. Laurent was the Doctor Sebastian referred to, though they believe, due to what Howard showed them, that Mewtwo wanted revenge on Harry for capturing it. As the pair reunite with Lucy (who was taking photos of the lab), they find that someone has released the Greninja and have to flee from the lab with the Pokemon in hot pursuit. They successfully escape, but the forest around the lab begins collapsing in on itself, revealing that it’s actually a bunch of giant, genetically engineered Pokemon. In the chaos, Pikachu is injured badly, and in desperation Tim begs a herd of Bulbasaur to help him find a healer Pokemon.

The Bulbasaur take Tim and Pikachu- the Pokemon force Lucy to stay behind- to Mewtwo, who has been expectantly waiting for Pikachu to bring “the son.” Mewtwo heals Pikachu and starts to show the pair what really happened that night, but is cut off when what Tim believes is Howard’s son abducts Mewtwo again. What was shown before Mewtwo was captured makes Pikachu look complicit in what happened to Harry, and heartbroken and believing he betrayed his friend and would betray Tim too, Pikachu leaves.

Wandering alone, Pikachu ends up at the bridge where the crash happens and he finds signs of the Greninja, realizing that Howard had lied to them. Knowing Tim would go straight to Howard, Pikachu bolts towards Ryme City and arrives too late- Howard’s true goal of merging himself with Mewtwo has been achieved. As he spreads R throughout the city and uses Mewtwo’s powers to merge every human present with their Pokemon partners, chaos unfurls, and Pikachu does his best to fight Howard!Mewtwo, even managing to figure out how to use his powers again. Though he is unable to truly beat Howard, he reveals that he only needed to distract him as Tim disconnects Howard from Mewtwo and allows Mewtwo to take control of itself again. Howard is arrested, Mewtwo fixes everything, and it explains what really went down with it and Harry, though before it can fully explain what happened to Harry… Pikachu gets imPorted.

And would immediately, upon arrival, become Harry again with literally no memory of anything but the crash until he gives in to a caffeine craving and becomes Pikachu again with no memory of being Harry (see powers).

PERSONALITY:

There’s a lot to unpack here.

Harry Goodman is a detective who lost his wife ten years ago, threw himself into his work to cope, and alienated his only child who now doesn’t even want to see or talk to him, but at least he’s a damn fine detective- a legend in the Ryme City Police Department. So skilled at his craft that he was sent to capture the most powerful Pokemon in the world. And despite everything, loves his son more than he loves anything else.

Harry Goodman-as-Pikachu is an amnesiac who is a damn fine detective, a caffeine addict, and also 1’4 of fluffy electric mouse cuteness, and has barely any concept of how his attacks work.

Pikachu- to distinguish from Harry Proper- has all of Harry’s basic personality traits and none of the baggage. He’s the kind of hard-nosed detective you see in movies, who won’t stop until he gets his man, who’s quick with a quip and when he gets an idea in his teeth, he won’t let go of it. All of these are great skills to have for a detective and are probably how Harry Proper has coped with his grief for ten years (we know he watches old detective movies religiously), and that’s transferred onto his amnesiac Pikachu self, who obviously doesn’t have a concept of why this could be a problem. For a Pokemon, that’s all well and good. Pokemon are quirky. For a human, it can be alienating to the people who love you- and was.

Possessing an unrelenting determination and drive, when Pikachu sets his mind to objective, he will stop at literally nothing short of a brick wall (and, honestly, he would probably try to climb up the brick wall before he would ever consider giving up). He has strong instincts and believes fully in what he can feel in his guts (or his “jellies”), and despite being a film noir stereotype on many levels, he never stops believing in hope. Even at his lowest point, presented with evidence that everything he thought he believed was a lie and crushed beyond belief, it takes very little to allow him to piece together where he was wrong and run straight back into the case. His belief in his causes and other people are strong, and he was willing to betray everything to set right a huge wrong that he contributed to, both as Harry and as Pikachu.

Pikachu is clever and capable of thinking outside the box, but his sense of humor tends to make him come off as irreverent and silly. His rapidfire method of thinking and a total lack of patience means that he’s often throwing out stupid, inane suggestions just to hear himself talk- he might not truly believe Harry faked someone else’s death and that’s the key to this whole thing, but he’s gonna throw it out there, just in case. He lacks a filter, and will say whatever pops into his head- some of this is probably due to the fact that with Tim, everything he says is understood and he doesn’t have that with just anyone, but since that will be true with everyone in game, he will likely not ease up on that. He will just keep on fast-talking his way through life. He rarely plans for anything and operates in the moment, which works well with that fast-talk and clever knack for improvisation.

Despite being ultimately a good and decent person, Pikachu has a number of intense flaws that are definitely traits held over from Harry- just because Pikachu doesn’t have baggage doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have everything that caused Harry’s baggage, in the first place. He’s fixated and obsessive and when he’s zeroed in on something, he doesn’t want to back down from it. The breakneck pace of the film is likely due to Pikachu not wanting to back down from finding out why he lost his memories/what really happened to “Harry” even for a second- every single moment is dedicated to solving the mystery, because that’s how Pikachu is driving the action and taking Tim, reluctantly at first, along for the ride.

He will not back down when he feels like he has a point or has strong feelings about something, so you can either relent or he’ll keep at you until you give in if he believes he needs you. He can be unbearably stubborn and this works towards the greater good and also to his own detriment- the very second he believes he betrayed “Harry,” he shuts down, refuses to let Tim use his own hope and beliefs against him, and runs away so he doesn’t hurt Tim as well.

At one point, Pikachu (who, again, has amnesia) unloads comically on a Mr. Mime, believing its miming to be a dig on his inability to form close connections because he pushes people away and then hates that they leave him. At the time, it’s viewed as humorous, but in retrospect, it’s a pretty deep representation of how even on a subconscious level, Pikachu is aware of his human flaws. This is likely how Harry coped with losing his wife and alienating his son- by pushing people away and putting everything into his work to the point where it seemed like that was all he cared about, which likely made him mildly resentful and started him on an endless cycle he was unable to break until the end of the film.

POWER:

Pikachu traits: Electric-based attacks (Volt Tackle, Discharge, Electro Ball, and Thunderbolt), resistance to electricity. Also knows Quick Attack.

Human Transformation: He turns back into Harry when not sufficiently caffeinated (when he’s Harry he remembers nothing about his experiences as Pikachu and vice versa). As soon as he consumes caffeine, he reverts back into Pikachu.

Comprehend Languages: can understand and communicate with any living being, regardless of language barriers (i.e. Pokemon and regular animals, as well as all human languages).

[There's a cute yellow creature fiddling with a camera.

This is a little strange, but maybe he's doing something for the Vine (does Vine still exist here?) As he adjusts the camera, he's muttering to himself.]

Okay. Just put that there, nice and easy. [The phone falls over.] Dammit.

[He finally gets it into a position and backs away so everyone can see the full effect of his adorable Pikachu self.] Oh god. Okay. Let's try this. [He clears his throat.] Hi. My name is Pikachu, and if y'all could do me a real solid here, I just need a count of how many people can actually understand what I'm saying. So if everyone who can hear me speaking human words could give me a big thumbs up, that'd be great. And if all you're hearing is "Pika Pika" feel free to announce your confusion and I'll know not to try to talk to you, mmkay? Awesome.

[He stands there for a moment, as if waiting for something and slowly his eyes fall on the phone.] Guess it... Helps if I turn this thing off first.
